The One and Only Ivan_1

 체형 교정에 좋다는 말에 팔랑개비 귀가 되어 바로 등록한 주말 발레반.

실상은 요가와 필라테스 동작이 결합되어 발레 요소가 많이 줄어 들은 내용이긴 하지만 운동이라곤

숨쉬기 운동밖에 모르는 내겐 그야말로 청천벽력 수준... 평일이었으면 게으름에 넉다운되어 몇 번 나가고

싫증을 냈을텐데, 그나마 주말반이라 졸리운 눈을 하고 열심히 나가고 있다. 덕분에 매의 눈을 지닌 발레

강사분이 내가 틀린 자세를 할 때마다 매번 교정해 주시느라 한창 고생하고 계신다.

 '발레 수업이 끝나면 외출한 김에 뭐라도 하고 와야지'라며 집을 나서기 전 뭘할까 꼼지락거리다가 선물로 받은 극장

상품권과 지인이 추천해 얼마 전 구입한 Katherine Applegate 책 두 개를 노려보다 Ivan 택! 발레가 끝나자마자 근처

커피전문점에서 겉만 우아한? 속은 지칠대로 지쳐버린 컨디션으로 책을 읽기 시작했다.

 일요일 오후 다섯시가 지나가는 즈음, 책 속 코끼리 Stella 때문에 마음이 아파졌다. 집에 가서 해야 할 일들이 떠올라

서둘러 커피숍을 나서긴 했지만 Stella에게 한 약속을 Ivan은 지킬 수 있을까라는 궁금함이 가시질 않는다.

뒷부분이 궁금해도 ''The One and Only Ivan' 오늘은 여기까지~

 분명한 건 책을 읽을수록  동물들을 대하는 인간의 잔인함이 낱낱이 드러나 읽는 내가 괜히 더 미안해진다는 사실이다.

- ' I am Ivan. I am a Gorilla. It's not as easy as it look.

- ' It's not so bad, I wanted to tell the little boy. With enough time, you can get used to

    almost anything.'

- 'We also enjoy old Western movies. In a Western, someone always says, "This town

   ain't being enough for the both of us, Sheriff." In a Western, you can tell who the good

   guys are and who the bad guys are, and the good guys are always win.

  Bob says Westerns are nothing like real life.

- 'Everywhere is my home," Bob answered. " I am a wild beast, my friend: untamed and undaunted."

- ' I wonder who this Picasso is. Does he have a tire swing like me? Does he ever eat his crayons?'

- 'Homework, I have discovered, involves a sharp pencil and thick books and long sighs.'

-'I don't know why people talk to me, but they often do. Perhaps it's because they think I can't

  understand them. Or perhaps it's because I can't talk back.'

- "Memories are precious," Stella adds. "They help tell us who we are."

- 'Ruby is hit. I don't know whether to be happy or sad.'

- "I've never asked for a promise before, because promises are forever, and forever is an unusually

   long time. Especially when you're in a cage."

   "Domain," I correct.

- Gorilla don't name their newborns right away, the way humans do. We get to know our babies first. We

  wait to see hints of what might yet be.
